It is Good to Give Thanks to the Lord!
Psalm 92:1
December 1, 2013
Dear Friends,
As we await the coming of our Lord, celebrated and anticipated during the Advent and Christmas seasons, it is appropriate that we give thanks to the Lord for the wondrous things he has done. First and foremost, of course, we are thankful for the great salvation we have in Jesus Christ, Who is the Word made flesh.
Here are some things that have happened (so far) in 2013 through the Hebrews 13:3 Project that I would like you to join me in thanking God for:
1. The PRO Mentors Initiative: Over 60 Permanently Reentering Offenders (PROs) have registered for this program that provides mentors for men in San Diego County jails when they are released from custody.
2. The Miramar Brig Bible study group: Over 40 men have participated this year, with an average of about 10 each week. Twelve of those 40 have been released.
3. The new Chaplain at the Miramar Brig, Lt. Coates: Chaplain Coates has helped expand the work I do, enabling and encouraging me to meet one-on-one with inmates on a regular basis.
4. For the men I have personally mentored this year:
Active Duty Navy: Michael, Keon
Brig inmates: Brad (recently transferred to the US Disciplinary Barracks at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; Chris (currently awaiting his court martial)
PROs from East Mesa Reentry Facility: Jason, Rob, Chris, Raul, Karl, Justin, Brandon
PROs on parole: Chris, Greg
PRO Mentor-in-training: Kyle
Pen Pal in Arizona: Clark (thank God especially for a 14-hour visit over three days during Veterans’ Day weekend)
5. For the many of YOU who support this ministry with your donations and prayers.
As the celebration of our Lord’s birth draws near, please Remember the Prisoners who will be away from their children, wives, and parents. Pray that they will use this time to contemplate the miracle of God becoming a man. I have been asked by Chaplain Coates to deliver a brief meditation to the prisoners at the worship service to be held on Christmas morning at the Brig. Please pray for my preparation, and give thanks for this opportunity.
Peace in Christ,
Ben
