Dear Friends,

Last Monday night was the annual volunteer appreciation dinner at the Miramar Brig.  It was my 10th dinner, so I was given a special gift of thanks.  Of the 100 or so volunteers that serve the Brig and its various programs, less than 10 of us have been coming for 10 years or longer.

This week, we began a study in Daniel.  After finishing Galatians in March, we spent a couple of weeks doing an overview of the Old Testament, especially to set Daniel in its proper historical context.  We’ve had as many as 16 men attend the study recently.

In the coming weeks, another Brig volunteer, Tony, will also be teaching on Monday nights, tag-teaming with me.  Tony has been volunteering at the Brig for about six years, and has been leading a co-ed Bible study.  Because of various “incidents,” however, the Brig is now disallowing co-ed groups.  With the cancellation of his co-ed group, Tony will now be teaching on Mondays every other week.  I plan to be there every week, but the teaching will be shared by Tony and me.

For those of you concerned about the incarcerated women, there is a group of about five trained women from Prison Fellowship that meet for Bible study with the female prisoners.  The Miramar Brig houses all female inmates in the entire Department of Defense system.

The chaplain has also given me the go-ahead to meet with prisoners during visitation times on the weekends.  This is an answer to many years of prayers.  Pray for Mike, who has been granted parole and will return to West Virginia in the next few weeks; I’m hoping to visit him several times before he leaves.
