August 14, 2014
Dear Friends,
At the Miramar Brig, we’ve just finished Mark 11 and are moving toward the glorious events in Jesus’s life that purchased and secured our salvation. I’ve been meeting regularly with Chris M. (age 31) since he was first incarcerated, before his court martial. His sentence ended up being longer than he expected, so he is adjusting to his two-year rehabilitation program and learning to be content in Christ. I also meet regularly with Josh (age 26), who loves the Bible and is dealing with post-trial legal issues right now.
In the PRO Mentors program (www.pro-mentors.com) at East Mesa Reentry Facility (EMRF), John (age 52) and Rick (age 23) will be released later this month. I am mentoring Rick, who will be living in a sober living home and attending outpatient drug treatment. Ben will be mentoring John. I am also mentoring Matt (age 28), who will be released in mid-October.
We will be training new mentors this Saturday, August 16. Pray for the new mentors and for the men they will be matched up with from EMRF. (We need mentors for Kelly, John, and Smitty right away.)
Chris S. and I have been meeting for over a year, and are beginning a study through Ephesians on Tuesday mornings. We’ve already studied through Jonah, Galatians, and Daniel. Chris turns 36 next week, has a part-time job at IHoP, and a very supportive family.
I also meet monthly with Greg (age 42), who lives about 40 miles away, in the north part of San Diego County. Greg is about to finish his “probation” period—not his legal status, but for the first full-time job he’s had since being released in February of 2013. Stable employment should help stabilize Greg’s housing situation.
Pray for me as I travel to the Midwest later this month. I’ll be in Indianapolis just after Labor Day to help my parents celebrate 60 years of marriage.
Safer Streets through Christian Discipleship
This Fall, I am seeking God’s goodness and guidance in raising $15,000 locally (in San Diego County) before the end of the year. My “Safer Streets” campaign is an effort to have 50% of my annual budget come from local donors. The PRO Mentors program directly benefits the people of San Diego County, yet only 3% of my funding in 2013 came from local folks. Please pray that God will provide more local donors to partner with me in this effort to keep men from returning to custody.
As always, thanks be to God for you and others like you who support this ministry in prayer and donations.
Sincerely in Christ,
Ben Conarroe
